Pardon me for asking, but everyone has assumed this washing machine washes clothes.
It could be designed to wash milk bottles or other crockery etc., in which case it wouldn't need to spin. The motive power would then be small and it would be possible to change 3-phase motor(s) for single phase - that's if it is 3-phase, which seems doubtful.
An interesting point there from Damocles. There's an outside chance that it IS single phase but some plonker replaced a damaged mains lead with whatever they had lying in the junk box. We also don't know - because nobody asked yet - whether there are any other cores in that cable. I would not expect a thing that size to be double insulated so where is the earth wire?
Isearson, if there are only three wires altogether you might be in luck after all. You'll have to get the back off to find out what goes where. At this point you should be able to see whether any of those wires connects directly to the chassis. If you're really lucky you'll find a nice terminal block marked L,N and E (though not necessarily in that order).
i left it a few days and hopefully things have calmed down now. the machine is for washing clothes and the original cable is in place and yes the colours that i previously stated are correct still yet to speak to miele to see what they suggest. but for the record im installing the unit on a solid concerete floor.
im still trying to get thru to miele service to chat about 3 phrase and changing to use on domestic current, and i will keep you posted but if all else fails i will SCRAP IT.....i mean sell it on
Take the connection plate that the cable goes to off to inspect the terminals , if you have L1,L2,L3, N and earth it is 3ph probably, however you might be able to install links between L1,L2,L3 to turn it into single phase you could be in luck and it could be dual ,you did say 240v was on the machine.
I've found the answer......So all listen up carefully
As i said 1st the machine is 25AMP. I rang miele themselves and had a engineer out.
I asked miele what was making the machine 25AMP, they told me it was becuase of the commercial heating elements and in this machine there is 2. So miele have disconnected one of the elements which makes the machine 13AMP, then put a normal 3 pin plug on it plugged it in and there you go one commercial washing machine running on 13AMP.
You may be asking about the elements, and running on 1 element causes no extra massive electricity costs it adds 10mins onto every wash
Excellent result, but I hope you can see why given the size of the thing, the fact that it was a "commercial" product, and the unusual cable colours (what is each one for, BTW?), people wondered for a while if it was 3-phase.
And presumably if/when the element you are using fails, you can just swap to the unused one without the cost & aggro of replacement. Neat.
Thanks for coming back to us, its nice to know how the story ended. (in this case happily, as it was after all only the heaters that required a special supply, not the motors).
Well done, and happy washing.
best regards M.
