Hi,

I am in the process of installing an 'on suite' shower room, in the master bedroom.

The missis now wants a toilet fitting in the room, but I am not entirely sure how much work is involved or wether it can even be done !!! I realise I can dig up half of my garden and install a new 4" drainage pipe, etc, etc. But is there an easier way ? Such as a macerator and pump to the existing drainage ?

Sorry if this is a dumb question and don't worry I will be getting in a plumber !!!! I have attached a diagram if it helps.

The pic isn't very clear, but the toilet at the top of the pic is the 'proposed' one and the other one is the existing, the black round dot on the left is the existing downpipe. It is a semi detached house and above these rooms is a loft, which will take any pipework, etc.

Anything is possible!

Install it properly, don't fit a macerator if at all possible. If that means digging up the garden, getting all necessary permissions and paying a bit more then go for it. In the long run you'll be glad you did.

Thanks for the reply Denso. I would really like to avoid the digging if at all possible. Simply as it would mean digging up the drive, etc, etc and a great deal more expense.

So I guess what I really want to know is.... Is it possible to do it WITHOUT digging and laying a NEW drainage pipe.

And what would be the best alternative solution and how would it be implemented. I am guessing a macerator, but I have zero experience of them, so what would be involved ? If it is a real pain in the proverbial, then I will just give the missis the bad news and relax (I won't have to worry about it !!!)

Macerators are noisy, break down easily, are disgusting to repair and expensive to replace.

You say the boss 'now' wants a WC in the En-suite. Were you always intending to fit a shower and basin anyway? If so where were the waste pipes for these going? What is the floor construction - if suspended can you find a route to the existing bathroom?

Thanks for the replies. I now have all the ammo I need. NO TOILET !!!!

WHEW !!! Thanks again.

No doubt I will be asking more questions as the job progresses !!!

Hi Denso, these are not an issue, I believe the waste from these can go to a rain drain ? Which is accessible, quite easily at that side of the house. The floor is standard wooden joists !!

I intend to exit the exterior wall and slope off to a 3" gutter down pipe.

You might not be off the hook yet then! Looking at your sketch it looks to be about 4m from one WC to the other. It would also depend on the drainage pipework to the existing toilet e.g. is it below the floor, but it might be an option going from one to the other.

I realise it's not as easy as that what with connections, vent requirements, gradients etc etc etc, but worth checking.

, I believe the waste from these can go to a rain drain ? .

Only if drainage system is combined surface water/soil....................if a dual system then ALL waste must go to soil.

MMM. That might be an issue.

I was planning on using the gutter drain at the front of the house, but I dont know if that runs to the sewer !!!! I can feel a lot of digging coming up.

Back to that toilet I guess. Why do we start these jobs eh !!!!

I remember saying to the 'boss'

"Ah don't worry it won't cost much and it'll be done in a fortnight !!!" LOL.

Anyone know a good plumber ????
