New toilet to cast iron waste

Is it possible to connect a plastic fitting to a cast iron waste without removing the collar on the waste. The reason is that the back of the collar is almost flush with the wall which makes it impossible to get an angle grinder or any other cutting tool in position without removing a substantial section of wall.The present toilet is fitted to the waste with what looks like putty and hemp (?)
