Not for me, a birthday present for my son. Unfortunately I know nothing about cameras as I've never been interested. Any ideas as to what would be good? It's an 18th birthday present so am willing to spend a bit if need be.

It depends really on what he wants to do. If it's just snaps then his mobile phone probably does a good job. If he has an interest in photography and wants to learn more than you can get reasonably priced good DSLR cameras for learning on!
I don't see much point now of small point and shoot digital cameras when phones are so much better than they were.

Here's a good guide. Nikon I can recommend highly if he wants to learn properly, its a good kit. The handy thing about being able to change lenses is not only that he can play/learn and take some great photo's is that you're not stuck for the next year or so for present ideas!

Nikon,Canon,Sony seem to be the ones for basic DSLR cameras, for bridge cameras Panasonic are a good bet, just avoid the Chinese kits on eBay.

With cameras you will spend way more on the lenses and equipment than on the body itself which you can get for a few hunderd to a few thousand depending on your budget.
But also whether you want to go DSLR or mirrorless.

Not that I really understand any of it. I've never owned a camera other than the one on my phone.
My first 'proper' camera which I bought in 1976 at a big photographic warehouse in West Drayton was a Zorki 4k, Russian, and I believe a copy of a Leica. Cost about 24 quid.
I've seen them on ebay for about 20 quid, I'm tempted to buy one purely for nostalgic reasons. A couple of years later I bought a Russian SLR rom the same place. Good cameras in their day.
I only ever use the phone these days but very good cameras on the Huawei.

I presume it's a 35mm film SLR? (he days, rapidly approaching his limit of camera knowledge)
It is 35mm but not SLR, and like me, a bit of an antique these days.

SLR means, single lens reflex? what does that mean?
Someone may correct me but on the old camera in the picture, it has a viewfinder which is the square window above the lens, when you look through that it more or less shows what will be in the picture, with an SLR you are actually looking through the lens itself. There may be more to it than that, I'm no photographer.

The viewfinder is not inline with the actual image sensor, a little mirror reflects the image into the viewfiender and then moves when you press the shutter button.

Also invest in lots and lots of high quality SD cards, you can never have enough. Does he have a decent computer to edit the pics?
Another benefit of the DSLR is that you can find older lenses that fit that might not be motorised but will save you a packet picking them up at fairs etc.
