Anyone had one yet? I gave up smoking about 25 years ago but maybe because I worked with asbestos in the past ( brake/clutch linings), based on my telephone consultation, I’ve made it through to the second round. Got to go to a mobile testing unit next month for further checks.

I've never smoked although worked with asbestos in the 80s and 90s. I don't qualify

Yep bit of a joke that its targeting smokers and not those who have worked in heavy industry and asbestos related industries

They should probably change it to 45, catch it early

Screening has downsides. If you screened 100 completely healthy people some will get false positives. If biopsies are needed then that's painful and an infection risk. Plus its resources that might be better spent elsewhere.

The statisticians normally spend a lot of time trying to work out the ideal cut off for screening to maximise effectiveness

Well maybe it’s just because I used to be a smoker 25 odd years ago but I just wonder why they specifically asked the asbestos question in the pre-screening phone call? They also asked if I’ve ever had COPD or any history of lung cancer in the family. I hadn’t.

Maybe you were asked because people who both smoke or smoked AND have been exposed to asbestos are many times more likely to develop LC, then those who were smokers alone, or asbestos - exposed alone.

smoking can make you about 50 times more likely to get asbestosis

Even if it's not used to determine eligibility it is useful information if they do find a trace of something in the scans.

Gave up smoking 26 years ago, I also worked with asbestos, artexing in the 1970's and 80's. My old man was also an artexer, he died from pulmonary fibrosis and lung cancer caused by asbestos, it took 10 years of incapacitating illness before he passed away, it was awful for him, he couldn't do anything, constantly struggling to breathe. Big up to the MacMillan nurses who were absolute angels every time they came to look after him.

Same with my uncle, he did lagging.

people dont realise that you can claim industrial injuries for asbestosis etc and get additional benefits as a result . regardless of age

When I was a boy (1970's) our next door neighbours were an older couple. The man used to stand at his back door, chest heaving up and down. I remember him saying to me one time 'whatever you do lad, never go work down the pit!'

Yes, I have.

I received a text from the screening programme out of the blue and, after answering the questions, was found to be eligible so I had a CT scan of my lungs at the end of May. They found a nodule (a small area of roundish shadowing) which are apparently very common but I will be having another CT scan around the end of August.

This has been on offer in some area`s /age groups for the past 6 years now getting rolled out nationally
