It appears that Patrushev will be in charge of Russia when Putin is in hospital.

He may be even more ruthless that Putin.
 
It raises an interesting question. When Putin eventually goes whether in the coming weeks or years down the line, just what will the Russian political machine want to replace him with? Will there be a desire to thaw (at least to some extent) currently frosty relations with the west, or will they double down and continue as they are. I appreciate it's crystal ball stuff, however I hope for the sake of humanity it's the former.

On a global scale, why oh why can't we just live in peace with each other. I actually find it all quite upsetting. And yes I know (I'm not stupid, read my other posts) why this will never be, we'll be the masters of our own downfall, power greed corruption etc. Having said all that, it's still very sad.
 
Putin may well be replaced like for like, but with a single difference: hindsight. They will want to regroup, so might 'play nice' for the 10 years it might take. In any case, they will re arm, so the west won't be doing what they have been, ie cutting defence spending anytime soon.
