when I put the hot water on i can hear the burner fire up but after a couple of minuets it turns off and does not come back on. If i put the c/h and hot water on i will get hot water. any ideas???

Sounds like you have a gravity circulation problem. I would first check the small header/expansion tank in the loft. Make sure it has water in it.
you might have a blocked cold feed from the F&E tank or as 45 YGM says an empty F&E tank
hi sorry its taken som long to reply, just want to say thanks you were were right. The feed/expansion tank was bone dry. I have fitted a new ballcock and valve and its working again....even sorted out the banging noise witht the central heating.
