I woke this morning to find the lights not working upstairs, having checked the fuse this was fine, what can the problem be?

possible cause could be:
if your consumer unit has only one lighting fuse
broken connection in leg of wiring to upstairs
This could take a lot of investigation in trying to locate the break, have you recently installed a light fitting and perhaps dislodged or broken a core somewhere?
or you may have more than one lighting fuse?
In that case has that blown?

Ive not touched the lighting in any way, and i believe i have 2 fuses as i can turn on the downstaris lights no problem, and they go off when i remove the fuse.

Thanks

So you are saying:

1. Two lighting circuits - upstairs and downstairs.
2. All downstairs light operate as normal.
3. Fuse for upstairs lighting circuit appears intact.
4. All (are you sure it is all?) upstairs lights do not work.

Sounds like there is a break in the circuit somewhere. May be easiest to start with the CU and the fuses - try swapping the upstairs and downstairs fuses and see if downstairs still works. If it does, then 3 is confirmed.

Assuming you are au fait with electrics and have a meter, the next step would be to follow the lighting circuit from the CU, checking at each Junction Box/ Ceiling rose/ Light Fitting to locate the section of cable where the fault lies.

Cartridge fuse or fuse wire?

Checked neutrals?

Checked ceiling roses for loose connections?

Have you been in attic recently and possibly disturbed wiring?

Thanks for your help. It must be a problem going to the first light in the circuit. Its a bloody mess and one which i may leave to the pro's.

Thanks

Craig
