No lintel on outer skin of wall?

Morning all.

Just a question for my own knowledge really.

My house is 11 inch cavity walls. The inner skin has concrete lintels above the openings. The outer skin however only has a soldier course bridging the cavity. Shouldnt there be some sort of support holding the outer skin up above the openings? Surely it cant just rely on the upvc window frame?

It used to rely upon a stout wooden frame and some clever brickwork involving brick tor, DPC etc. But yes, you are correct in stating that UPVC replacements are not supporting. Its a simple enough remedy albeit faffy and thankless.

I did think it seemed odd. What would the remedy be?

100mm x 100mm angle iron lintel on the outer course.
Prop masonry, remove two courses of bricks above aperture, slot in support iron and replace the bricks.

My house is built like this too. During the last demolishion I discovered that they were cast in situ with rebar, including butterfly ties between every ~4th soldier and the cast lintel.
