I hesitated posting earlier because I thought I had fixed the problem - turns out I haven't.

I ran the bath this morning and it filled up as normal but towards the end the hot water pressure became very low until water stopped coming out completely.

I turned the hot water heating off (gas boiler) and subsequently realised that when my dad had disconnected the toilet yesterday to get under the floorboards he had inadvertently turned a valve off that is on the mains pipe to the F&E tank, so the tank was empty. I turned this back on and it filled up.

However there is still no water in my hot water tank - it just dribbles out - do I have to turn the boiler back on to get water in there - that seems a bit odd to me, but I know nothing about it.

Can anyone suggest anything?

You have an airlock.

You MIGHT be able to suck on it.

The professional way is to allow cold mains to enter the hot water pipe for about a minute.

This is easiest way is with a kitchen mixer tap. Turn on hot, block spout but still allowing water to pass from hot to cold, the open cold water for about a minute.

Also washing machine hoses and a back to back 3/4" will be better.

I did it with the mixer tap and it's working fine now I'm really happy thank you! You could hear it all gurgling back round the pipes. I will try not to let my dad turn valves off without turning them back on in future!

Well done!

You are lucky! Some can be very difficult to cure.

You should press the thanks button!
