Hi All,

I finally managed to get into my loft and locate the nosy fan. It's a Vent Axia fan and around 6 years old.

I contacted vent Axia and they basically said check for blockages which I did and there were none. If I remove all ducts that are going into the main unit the sound is still there.

Can any body give me any tips on what to do to shut this thing up and fix it.

Thanks

It's something internal that's faulty. Basically it's about 10-15 times louder than it used to be. Even my next door neighbour is complaining. You can hear it from the living room. I feel like the motor may be faulty.

Wondering if anybody has had a similar issue and managed to open the unit and replace a part etc. It's £350+ for a new unit.

With the power switched OFF open the casing and have a look at the fan blades. If they have dirt stuck to them then this can un-balance the fan and cause it to vibrate creating noise. Clean them with soapy water, this also improves the air flow through the fan as dirty blades create turbulance which causes some noise.

Failing bearings in the motor is another possibility

Check also for any loose bits that would be flapping around when the fan was running

I suspect it's faulty bearings too if it's that loud. Oil might help, but that's likely a short term fix

If the bearings are sealed ball type then oil will not help as it can't get past the seals.
On motors this small they often use sleeve bearings, which basically means the steel shaft runs in a brass sleeve. If this is the case then drip a few drops of light oil in each end whilst rotating the fan by hand. (Make sure the power is turned off first!). The oil forms a thin film between the shaft and the sleeve and runs on the surface of the oil. As stated earlier though, clean the blades thoroughly but make sure you don't get water into the unit.

Ventaxia are usually good for spares, if it is the motor, they can proberly do you that part only.

Google Vent Axia spares, there are a few on the list. It depends on the model (cannot read it on your video!??) but a fan for a HR100R costs just a bit over £100 including the dreaded.
