One more thing i can add, if you can identify what manufacturer your HDD is made by, maxtor / seagate / western digital / samsung etc etc you can download free disk checking software from their website.
For example if its a maxtor hard drive (now owned by seagate) you can download the seatools program.
The program will run a low level scan, and inform you of any problems with the drive.
