I have one radiator that starts to make a loud noise when the system heats up. If I adjust the trv the noise goes away. A friend has suggested that it's fitted the wrong way but I don't know if that means its fitted on the wrong side of the radiator, or the wrong way round! How do I tell and would I be safer just replacing the trv?

On the body of the TRV is there a double headed arrow ? if yes it's bi-directional, if not it should be fitted to the flow side of the Rad, you can tell which is the flow side by seeing which tail on the Rad gets hot first, if the rad (trv) makes a knocking sound and can change with trv adjustment it is very likely to be a single direction trv fitted to the wrong end of the Rad

There doesn't seem to be a double headed arrow on the TRV although it does appear to be fitted on the flow side (the side that heats up first). Do you think fitting a bi-directional TRV will sort the problem?
