turn the water off and dismantle the tap 
Don't know if you ever got a reply or have since solved the problem. But this just happened to me. Sounds like your water pressure is too high so turn down the mains stopcock a little (normally located in the kitchen under the sink but could be anywhere!). Keep turning down until the banging goes away.

That won't lower the pressure at all. It'll reduce the flow, for sure. Pressure will be unchanged though.
