I have a brass float valve that's suddenly started squealing when the cistern fills up . Do I need to replace the whole valve ?

Is that the washer that's attached to the white plastic part that moves with the ball cock ? If so that should be an easy fix

Usually inside the filling part. Confused as you say brass then plastic
Do you mean the washer in the piston of a Portsmouth ball valve ?

If you have a part 1 like the Portsmouth then you need this type. If you have a part 2 or 3 then you need this type.
It is cheap to fit a new one, and easier and quicker than rewashering the old.
I suggest swapping for new, then clean and rewasher the old one at your leisure, and put it in a clean plastic bag to swap back in 20 years when your new one wears out.
