Hi ... My daughter recently moved house and has an odd problem.. With a TRV

When the valve is fully open ( at No. 5 ) there is no problem at all, but if it is set to Any other setting, after a while ut begins to "sing" It produces a high pitched constant tone at about 2000 hz. Drives everyone mad

None of the other valves (all the same) do this?
Does it matter if the valve is in the flow or return?

depends on the valve....new ones are mostly bi-directional...check to see if you can see an arrow on the body of the trv.
you might need to replace it.

it is quite likely caused by the water flow squirting past the (almost closed) piston and making it vibrate. Try closing down the lockshiield valve on the other end, this will reduce flow. As long as thre's enough water getting through to make the rad hot, that's all you need. A lockshield can be fully closed, then opened a quarter of a turn, and be enough.

If you have a open-vented system (with a feed and expansion tank in the loft) see if the speed of the pump can be turned down. Again, the lowest speed that makes the rads hot is enough.

I'll tell her to turn the lockshield to half way.......
