Mrs Secure can't understand why I get upset when "someone you don't know from Adam dies".

You're upset because you "knew" them through what they did, their books, films TV shows, music, contributions to the public etc...., and also when the people you "grew up" with die, it is a reminder that you're getting closer to being in that position yourself.

And there were quite a few. Motown was the big thing in my early teens before progressing to 'proper' music. Only in the last couple of years I've revisited it and in particular the Four Tops, and some of their best were Holland Dozier numbers.
