Notable Obituaries.

In a letter to the Times yesterday a chap points out that B.B helped to raise money for a Spitfire fund during WWII and goes on to point out his great-uncle, John Hunter Blair had a cousin, David, who was KIA while piloting one of those iconic aircraft in 1942. He named it Blue Peter.

I know the famous logo for the show is a sailing ship but it's a weird coincidence, no?
 
Hall of Fame jockey Ron Turcotte, who rode Secretariat to the Triple Crown in 1973, has died. He was 84. He won the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes twice each, most notably sweeping the three with Secretariat to end horse racing’s Triple Crown drought that dated to Citation in 1948. Secretariat’s record time of 2:24 in the Belmont, winning by 31 lengths, still stands 52 years later.

Joe Caroff, the graphic designer responsible for the 007 gun logo as well as countless classic film posters has died, aged 103. His work can be seen on the posters for films including West Side Story, A Hard Day’s Night, Last Tango in Paris, Cabaret, Manhattan and The Last Temptation of Christ. Other key posters included Sergio Leone’s A Fistful of Dollars (1964) and For a Few Dollars More (1965), as well as Last Tango in Paris (1972), Rollerball (1975), An Unmarried Woman (1978) and Gandhi (1982).
