Of course you must test and certify it! Just switching it on and checking it still works will not test (for instance) that the earth connection became disconnected. Or that you have mistakenly swopped over the live and neutral on the back of that replacement 13A socket.

OK yes testing is good, but testing the earth on a shower unit with plastic covers on? I can see pb's point.

For a socket I use one of those polarity testers that you plug in.
