Number of sockets

Some great advice here. Heard alot about Cat 5 cabling. What exactly is it? Sorry for my ignorance.

ps yes RF i meant Aerial sockets

Reg 553.1.4: "Every socket outlet for household and similar use shall be of
the shuttered type, and for an AC installation, shall preferably be of a
type complying with BS1363."

note the use of the word "preferably" meaning that you can use whatever plugs you like, they would just prefer that you use BS1363 plugs..

the standard blue plugs all have flip up covers so they are shuttered, you cannot insert anything without deliberately lifting the cover first..

Cheers,
I think a basic rewire is good enough for me. I understand its more exspensive and why do people prefer it ( i read the attachments - very in depth)!

I see, so for me, Mr Basic with a PC to connect to Net what should I go for?

A decent broadand router (you may need to leave the freebie from your ISP in its box) which has a few wired ports and wireless.

Regard wired connections to it as the normal way to use it, and wireless as an exceptional way.

As you have somewhere where you'd logically have your PC, and router etc, run Cat 6/6a cables from there to a couple of likely places in most other rooms. These runs should link 8P8C wall outlets (commonly but incorrectly known as RJ45 sockets). Then in the office you can connect anything to anything with patch cables. In fact if you're going to have, say, 4 or more connections arriving in the office you might like to consider a small patch panel instead of regular wall outlets.

OR - you might have somewhere central where you could sensibly have the router and a patch panel, e.g. a cupboard under the stairs.

Oh - and finally - if you have an oldish PC knocking around that can no longer hack it with Windoze and media apps and web browsing etc, learn a bit about Linux and use it as a proper firewall.

This is beyond the capabilities of most of the population. Well beyond.

But the cover can be lifted by a finger exposing big live holes into which kiddies can poke things. That's not a shutter IMHO. And the covers can get broken off, especially on extension leads.

As b-a-s said, using an Interlocked socket is probably an acceptable way of achieveing the 'equivalent level of safety'
