can anyone tell me what sort of sized oak beam would be necessary to replace a loadbearing wall with one storey above (timber frame so RSJ should not be required). Any idea where i can find out the required size without going to a structural eng and paying the fees?

Thanks

The advantage of an engineer is that he can calculate the correct size for you and you then have the advantage of his professional Indemnity Insurance should it fail.

What would he charge? £200 max. Money well spent.

If you install the RSJ then you will not have to calculate for a wooden beam. You can add cosmetic wood or similar to disguise the RSJ.
