Recently had a new Vaillant 831 installed during some building works. The installer just left it with a plug as the builders had their own electrician doing work so he was to do the thermostat once that room was ready.

The boiler works fine and I currently use a vaillant time switch to control it. A thermostat was installed but appears to have no actual effect. What I can't figure is having looked at it tonight just what they have done and who I should be bringing back(I'm reluctant to get the electrician if it's his error and likewise the installer).

The thermostat is a Drayton RTS8, reading the manual the install shows a2 or 3 wire setup(plus earth). Having just looked in the stat we actually have 5 wires, earth and then brown, blue, white and yellow. These colours look to be non standard which is one oddity but the instructions for the stat only ever show a 2 or 3 wire setup (excluding earth), mine has all 4 connected to each of the 4 available slots. Previously it didn't even trigger when the dial was moved, tonight after having moved the screw with a star shape on it a bit the stat now seems to trigger at certain temps on and off but has no effect on the boiler.

Having said all this I'm now considering scrapping the mechanical timer for something more useful (the BG hive advert caught my attention but I know there are cheaper alternatives to give timed temperature control the time switch 160 doesn't). But first things first, should I be worried by how the electrician gas wired the stat as nothing online even matches the colours so no idea what he has done, nor why all 4 wires are wired compared to the Drayton instructions?

Any ideas?

What documentation do you have from either, because in the circumstances I would not pay either fully until they finish the job properly You should have the Part P approved Certificates completed by the electrician and the Gas Safe Certificates from the engineer.

From the sound of it the builder is the one doing the electrics using a subby. No problem with that but it is for the Builder to drag the electrician back, not you. Perhaps the same can be said of the "installer"

Don't touch any of it or they will just lay the blame on you. Go back to who you contracted to do the work and make sure they get it sorted. It is not unknown for even the qualified to make mistakes, so you should always give them the opportunity to put things right.
