Hi

I am considering sanding down a fairly old pine worktop we have in our kitchen, and then oiling it. See picis below

I have been practising on an old bit of wood with tung oil, but have not been that impressed with the result.

I wondered if this was actually the way to go, or whether oiling is more suited to hardwoods?

I have read on the forums that there are specialist oils for kitchen worktop.
Anybody have any experience of these, or is there another finish suitable for antique pine ?

Any help would be appreciated.

cheers

an oiled kitchen worktop will need a great deal of maintenance.

It will get watermarks and rings from hot things, and it will get scuffed and scratched.

It will give you something to do though, rubbing it down and re-oiling once a week.

there is a reason why plastic laminate has been so popular for the last 50 years

that does not sound like much fun. I wonder if a good quality ultra-tough varnish might be better. I would have better water resistance anyhow, whihc is needed at there is a sink in the middle of the worktop
