Hi

We have just had a series of pine freestanding kitchen cabinets and worktops given to us by a neighbour. He thinks it is treated with Danish oil and wax mixture? The wood is quite dark and we would like to do something to the existing finish to make it lighter.

Can we remove the existing finish by caustic bath or is this too extreme?

Can we remove the existing finish by just sanding back and reoiling worktops and possibly painting the cabinets and cupboards in a pale contrasting colour.

Does anybody have a good reference to a 'How to treat pine worktops' website page with clear steps and instructions.

The sink worktop is quite discoloured black by water. any ideas how to deal with this or just easier to flip worktop over and start again with underside?

Thanks

The caustic would work but not for the worktops as i can't imagine anyone would ever guarantee it is safe/ non-toxic after dipping. It can also leave things looking quite beat up looking with cracking/ splits which may be is what your after.

You can definately sand and refinish the worktop which would most likely remove the black marks anyway but as far as painting goes you will have to remove the wax and oil anyway as nothing will take properly over it.
