A stupid question I know...

Say I want to use a brand new 2/3 metre length of copper tube. Are you supposed to trim the pipe ends with a pipe cutter, deburr them etc. to get 'good ends' or is the idea that you just use them straight out of the pack without trimming them down?

The reason I ask is the ends of pipe from the factory (I've seen) don't look 'as nice' as pipe that's been cut with a pipe cutter and tidied up. Specifically the end of un-cut pipe has a square-ish profile and is missing the bevel a pipe cutter makes.

Cheers

The end profile isn’t the bit that seals

I would say the only criteria is only whether the end has a dent in it, that would make a seal not so certain whether solder, compression or push fit

If the end is undamaged and will enter a fitting correctly, no need to trim.

Depends what type of fitting it's going into - end feed and compression (olive) will usually have no issues - yorkies usually would though - Always best to deburr non-pipe sliced ends.
