Hello - complete DIY novice and forum newbie here. My partner and I moved into a c.1910ish house a couple of months ago and are in the middle of renovating it.
We had the floors sanded before we moved in and discovered and old hearth under the carpet, which you can see in the photos below. At the time it seemed like a nice (and less stressful) idea to leave it in place as an original feature - however now we've moved in it's become clear that it's in pretty bad condition and will need to be repaired.
I have no idea where to start, I figure the best thing to do would be to pull the tiles out and then reset them, chipping out the concrete and replacing with wood which we can stain and varnish to match the floorboards. Is this sensible/realistic? Or should I do something else completely? Any advice gratefully received!
