If you cut them you'll generally need to cut a thread onto them and run from that, much easier to use an existing thread if you can find one that's in about the right place

indeed - for a Gas man born in `77   piece of **** for a plumber born in `54 - been, done , got T shirt - still got a set of stocks/dies if you can`t hire any ;) muggles is right

I have never seen it done as usually there is a thread which can be used.

Possibly a lead loc or similar compression fitting might be found to fit.

I was kind of thinking ahead - as in it would be difficult to thread a new pipe under the floorboards. But born in 54' , you probably can't remember your own name most of the time, let alone how to thread a pipe :D

I got my teeshirt before most of you and would use a 22mm compression fitting depending on what size iron pipe you have
Done a whole heating system in a church once using black iron...never again.

There is a comp. (repair) fitting for barrel with rubber olives - but I can`t remember it`s name
