Old Wallpaper. What to do

I just moved into a fairly old house. My bedroom has pretty old wallpaper everywhere. I hate it. What are my options. I am pretty nervous to start removing it because I have no idea what is under it. Should I paint it, or will that look really cheesy. Help. Where do I start

Remove it, otherwise its just a botch job. If the stuff underneath is rubbish, then it'll remain rubbish even if you paint over it.
