Hi I'm new here and a complete novice at DIY.

I have an old wooden balcony (approx 25 years old) that looks as if it has been stained mahogany (I think) and varnished. It is now all chipped and has black spots on it.

We can't afford a new one so can anyone advise what I need to do to breathe life into the old thing.

Sorry if this is a simple matter - I really am a complete novice and clueless - I learn quickly tho' :D

Black spots are probably mould, which happens with varnishes, they chip and crack (as they have) and allow moisture in, but then trap it.

Sand of the varnish and wash the deck down, this will probably get rid of most of the black spots (you might be able to remove the varnish with a pressure washer with warm water). If black spots don't come out, use a deck cleaning product that contains oxalic acid, clean down and re-stain the boards (and don't varnish them).
