Newcastle was always a popular destination for Royal Navy ships to visit for R&R.
In the 80's the local liaison officer would hire a night club/dance hall for a ship's company dance and put out personal invitations to local nurses and others.
I have hazy memories of some good times there.
The modern navy now has mixed male/female ship companies so I doubt whether the same applies today
