Omicron variant caught a cold

One needs to apply intelligence! You can't blindly compare things which we know would be different then proclaim a result - that figures aren't comparable.

"(No, it just means you can't directly compare the two sets of figures)" You're dead right, it's ridiculous to try. You're the only one who is. So no shít Sherlock, you're saying nothing.

You seem to have no idea of healthcare in SA. Everyone in this county can have free boxes of LF tests in the house, and can get a free PCR test, both of which are registered and counted, PCR 20% sequenced it was, more now.. How many from the townships do you think have that? A hint here: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipe...public_sector_nurses_and_physicians_in_SA.jpg. Tests are expensive, 80% have to pay. How many would?
I have had the advantage of working there for a while but that meant watching ordinary people die of appendicitis and TB, because they couldn't afford the healthcare. They claim tens of thousands of omi cases. How many do you think there really are?
You're misreading the site you linked , can't be bothered to pick it apart, just look at Campbell's video.

"They have a daily average of 21 deaths right now. How are none of them Omicron?" You can't imagine? Really? What they do, is they TEST them, then they COUNT them. That's why they're reporting that they have had zero omicron deaths.
If your contribution is to ask questions like that.............
Numbers are obviously not your thing. Never mind, just listen to their doctors. Who CAN count.

In interesting news, we've now got the most confirmed Omicron cases of any country in the world.
https://www.gisaid.org/hcov19-variants/

But that's because we do so much sequencing than most other nations. In percentage terms we're tiny, at 0.5%, compared to SA which had 89% of their sequences in the last month turn out to be Omicron.

This article is somewhat self-contradictory but worth looking at.
Daily Mail says that the wave is already peaking in SA, though that's not super-clear. Red line here:

The green line, 25% daily growth, would be a doubling in 3.1 days.
((ln2)/(ln1.25))

Gauteng figures are quoted as 90% omicron. Presumably most of those elsewhere are delta.

The figures could be very wrong, because they're testing fewer:

Those Cases bars are all a similar proportion, but the reason for less testing is not given. Nor who is being tested.
Overall, SA has tested at about 1/15th the UK's rate per million population. (Worldometers).

Some of the other graphs in the article appear to be clearly showing omicron less bad than delta.
So it's a poor set, a lot of "could be"s, but it does seem that
" 'At the moment, virtually everything points toward it being milder disease,' ".
Their Drs were saying that from their observations before the figures quoted here.

Meagre intellect mate, but it's clear to use quotation marks for the odd few words and it complies with forum Rule 11.

because you don't have enough information to say.

Do you know what "exponential" means?
let me see now

On Saturday 4th December, UK Health Security Agency announced it had identified another 26 Omicron cases

Now 250 cases a day

doubles to 500

doubles to 1000

doubles to 2,000

doubles to 4,000

doubles to 8,000

doubles to 16,000

doubles to 32,000

doubles to 64,000

doubles to 128,000 new cases per day

h'mmm

quite a lot.

Medical scientists are predicting 75.000 by April .

Edmunds said there was “not a shred of evidence” that Omicron was half as pathogenic as the Delta variant, but added that even if this were the case, it might not make the difference people hoped for. “This is a very severe setback. There is no question about that.”

“If you are worried about the time [at] which the NHS might start to get very stressed, then halving the hospitalisation rate means that buys you two to three days. I think it’s really silly to suggest this is good news; it couldn’t be further from that,” he added. “This is as bad news as you can possibly get, quite frankly.”

I trust SAGE epidemiologists over random doctors in the news.

Over the last couple of days Scientists in South Africa think that Covid has possibly mutated with the HIV virus and is now a different strain running alongside Covid . South Africa having the highest rate of HIV in the world .
This had been bothering me so I checked.

There was an example where someone with uncontrolled HIV had Covid for 200+ days. Because their immune system was crap and they weren't taking their Anti retrovirals they weren't able to fight it off which meant it had lots of time to mutate. They caught the original strain, or something very close, but ended up having a brand new one something like a combination of Beta, Delta and hints of Omicron. They eventually fought it off when they were on their retroviral medications properly.

There have been other cases of people with weak immune systems who've had Covid for hundreds of days but HIV probably makes up the largest single group.

Crikey. You need a good nights sleep fella. No wonder your in such a state.

Come on let's panic again, like we did last summer.

Covid deniers love using words like “panic” and “fearmongering” - because they don’t have to back them up with facts or evidence.

Simply because they are in a tizz, thinking about the personal risk the are taking, wondering if they have really done the right thing/backed the right horse and think everyone ought to be join them in their sense of panic. No need for panic or fear, if you do/have done the right thing.
