Hi,
This problem has got worse over the last few months. One upstairs radiator gets air in it, you can hear it going through the TRV end. I bleed it every day, no other radiator is affected. This is the oldest rad in the house, the other two upstairs have been changed and ALL had TRV fitted. We Have a back boiler system.
ANy ideas would be appreciated, it wakes the kids up every morning !

air is getting in somewhere..either a leak where u cant tell and air getting in your system is wrong and the pump is pulling air in and finding itself in that radiator.

venturi cuased by sludge build up on the neutral pressure point in the system is likely.

What is your c/f and o/v configuration?

David

Perhaps surprisingly, air can leak INTO a CH system when no water leaks OUT.

If the F&E tank has got water in it and there's no sign of 'pumping over' - ie. water flowing out of the end of the vent pipe which bends over the top of the F&E - then there probably is an air leak. First place to look is on the inlet side of the pump, especially the large nut securing the pump to the pipework.

If you've got a 'sealed system' (ie. no F&E tank) and / or the pump is inside the boiler, look for leaks on valves on radiator nearest to the boiler.

It would also be worthwhile to check that it really is air. Open the bleed screw on the affected rad and try to light the escaping 'air' with a match (taking care to keep curtains and other flammables out of the way). If it lights, it's hydrogen. Come back for more advice.

Microleaks I presume?

Id be amazed with a rad needing venting DAILY.

Quite possible I guess

Thanks for your comments

Sorry what is c/f and o/v?

The F&E tank has got water in and the vent pipe is dry.
The pump has an amount of scale around the shut off valve. It is dry, but has obviously come from a small leak at some point. The rest of the nuts and joints are dry and free from scale, and it is air!! It just blew the flame out.

Blew the flames out? if so it isn't air it is hydrogen which is produced by system corrosion get it checked out

If the gas coming out of the bleed screw wasn't ignited by a lit match but blew it out it's air not hydrogen.

Sorry, that's right, the air from the rad blew out the match, it did not ignite!

And yes, it does need bleeding mostly daily, definitely every two days. The top gets very cool, it is very noisy too, especially when the system first starts up.

Colour of the water also tells wether it's a air or hydrogen problem orange rusty colour is air ingress and a black water is hydrogen problem both and your buggered

Took the rad off yesterday, water was clear till the very bottom which was black sludge, no smell, cleaned it up and put it back on, still noisy but not as bad.......yet!!
