I have a 2008 Chevrolet Spark which has started making a kind of roaring sound from the front of the car. I put it on axle stands, removed the front wheels and ran it in gear. The left hand hub was spinning normally but the right hand hub was mostly stopped, just jerking round a few degrees now and then. I don't think the brake is sticking as the hub can be turned normally by hand and does not get hot when driving. Where the CV joints (both sides) meet the gearbox housing there is some play, suggesting worn bearings. Car has done 155000 km. Could it be stripped splines on the driveshaft?

The fact that it’s jerking now and then sounds to me like it’s possibly a wheel bearing rough/binding on the right hand hub. It’s not uncommon for one wheel to spin when both wheels off the ground because of the differential - only takes a bit more drag on one side to cause that. If you had stripped splines on any side, the car would just not move.

Put the wheels back on and try it again, but CAREFULLY put your foot against the tyre of the wheel that's turning, to add a bit of drag. The way a differential works, it turns whichever driven wheel has the least resistance, so once it starts turning one wheel, they rarely turn the other one. If you add a bit of drag to the one that's turning, it should stop and the other one should start turning.
