My chimney in my kitchen has been closed up and artexed over, I want to open it up and put a range cooker in there. I dont know the size of the current opening but i may have to make it bigger, Is this a DIY job with acros and a new rsj or is it for the professionals?

A professional is just someone who does the job for a living. Anything can be done DIY, if you know what to do.

I would say it can be done DIY, but I can't say whether you are competant to do it - only you can. Whether is needs propping and new supports inserted depends on the circumstances.

That's a worthwhile contribution Woody!! Seems to say a lot without meaning anything!!

One tries ones best :P

Let me elaborate. Any job is DIY if you know what to do.

The OP does not know himself how big the opening needs to be, and the post does not contain enough detail for anyone to say if additional structural supports are needed or not

So the answer is .... maybe .... maybe not.

HTH

If it has just been closed up then the integrety of the structure should be in place (lintel/ original brickwork etc..) I would knock out the work that was done to cover it and return it to it's original state, then make the decision on whether it's big enough.

Dependant upon your skill levels and confidence you can then re-size it or get the pros in. I am always happy enough to knock things about although baulk at structural work as that is beyond my limits.

it is what it is

although i did once buy something that wasn't what it said it was; i used it for something else and since then it is what is wasn't.
