Ordinary drill bit to drill holes for dowel pins?

Is it necessary to use a special drill bit in order to make holes for dowel pins or will an ordinary drill bit suffice?

I prefer a lip & spur bit as its easier to locate and gives a cleaner cut particularly on veneered board or melamine faced.

I also have a couple of TCT tipped dowel drills for the sizes I use the most
