Hi - I want to install a PIR floodlight above the garage.

Is it acceptable to have a plug in light in these situations?

I have sockets in the garage.

If not the consumer unit is also in the garage so could get a sparky in.

Cheers

Of course - thanks.

I think I'll fit it with a plug initially and then get it hard wired next time the spark is in doing other things.

I'm guessing with LED it needs to be a min of 20W?

It depends on what area you need to illuminate!
A 10watts LED flood may be adequate if it is just the front porch. A 50watt one might be large enough for a small car park.
Wembley has quite a lot of floodlights…….

I have a 6W LED flood above my patio at about 8 feet high. The light is adequate for moving around the patio. I also have a 12W over the rubbish bin area, which is a bit too bright.

Is there something in the Building Regs (or elsewhere) about light spillage outside the boundary of a property? Our neighbour across the road has a habit of leaving their exterior light on, shining into our front bedroom.

Just the driveway - about 10 metres or so.
Irrespective of brightness, is a floodlight appropriate for that? Will you be able to mount it high enough so that it will light the entire driveway without blinding drivers?

Lots of people have them on my road. I know because I set some of them off when I walk the dog!

It's pretty common I'd say and nothing out the ordinary.

I think the key is to get the angle right so it points right down.

I wouldn't want to annoy the neighbour opposite or drivers.

Yes I think there is. I've heard of businesses being taken to task for it.
