The backplate has come away from the through wall copper pipe from my outdoor tap. I have about an inch of copper pipe to work with on the outside with no access to the inside.

I've tried unsuccessfully to solder it back on as there's not much access to the joint, does anyone know if you can buy 1/2" hose union back plates with a solder ring in them?

Thanks

Try this.
Clean the end of the pipe that you want to solder to. Flux it and then heat it and run a bit of solder onto it, leaving a blob hanging on it.
Get the backplate and do the same only internally. Clean both bits that go together and then flux the pipe, using a pair of grips or pliers heat the pipe, as soon as the blob goes liquid shove the backplate on.

Never done it myself but, that's what I'd try first.

I have, wipe the molten solder round the end of the fluxed pipe with a dry cotton rag. Do it quickly and the rag will not scorch. The solder may look slightly frosted as it cools.

When tinning the socket, spin a piece of pipe in it to ensure the solder is well spread, them withdraw it.

The wall socket needs to be heated first, because it is thicker and slower to heat, while you press the pipe into it. If the solder looks frosted you will see it turn glossy when it melts.

Thanks for the tips! I'll give it a go tomorrow, fingers crossed.

FiremanT, almost but it's a straight not an elbow.

p.s.

if no luck put an elbow on it with a couple of inches of pipe running downwards and into a plate like Fireman showed.

you have to get the pipe fully dry. You can't solder pipe that is wet or steaming.
