I am doing up an old push bike, there are patches of metal here and there, and lots of scratches to the paintwork. I kind of like the beat up look, and I like to use what I have rather than buy new. I have some solvent-based interior varnish left over from indoor jobs, what would happen if I used that directly over the paint and metal of the bike frame? It doesn't need to look good, the idea is mostly to stop rust forming. The bike will be stored in a shed so won't be in the sun for long periods of time. Might I get away with this or would it be a total disaster?

It should be fine, but, if left in a dark place, the varnish will yellow. The yellowed varnish is not an issue, in and of itself. It will not become less effective as a protective covering. That said, you will need to slightly abrade the the existing (powder coated finish ?) before using the varnish, and then factor in the drying time.

At a guess, if you don't scuff up the old finish, the oil based varnish will scratch off .

Best of luck
