Probably a lot longer than most would have you believe.

Still a cack job though.

Who can say, a couple of winters like the last one, or a summer like the one they promised and it could fail.
You have impact and wear to consider too:
- if the cable is not properly secured and it rubs against the pebbledash
- the magpies peck at it
etc etc

It can just go like this due to cr@p installation

Basically it is not designed for and should not be used outside.

20-30 mins.
That's a guess based on your supplied information.

Knew there would be one smart-arse reply. Theres a 1.5mm twin and earth run inside house joined into a junction box with a 1.5mm 3-core flex that goes to outside light. Area not very sheltered either.

Possibly, but it might not.

HTF are we supposed to answer a question like the OP?

It's like going to a car forum and saying "I've just bought a new car. When is it going to break down?"

Ok then. what type of cable would be best to use apart from swa.

Unsheathed MICC IMO is the only option for blending into external brickwork.

RF - stop drooling!

I'd prefer to route the cabling internally so nothing is on show.

You could use Arctic cable, or run cable current in PVC conduit.

or - or run your current cable in PVC conduit even.

Any type of flexible cable clipped to an external wall to supply an outside light looks awful. It just screams DIY and not in a good way.

I just wish more people would have pride in their workmanship.

Flexible cable popping out of a wall and entering a floodlight or similar is exempt from the above. I'm getting at many jobs I see where flexible cable has been used over a distance.

Thought that was mainly used for temporary wiring (extensions leads and the like) not permenant? Can it be used for this also? :?:

That depends whether or not you subscribe to the NIC school of thought. In any case, it'd look horrible. HiTuf would also be my preferred option, followed by TRS. Terminating SWA into a standard DIY shed floodlight would be as good as impossible, as there's generally not even a gland knockout.
