Outside Sockets

I'm certainly not calling you a liar - I took "ban all ban all sheds" to be an expression of desire on your part relating to this site, and I offer fulsome apologies if I got that wrong and it's not at all what you would like to see happen.

how would you know that....

BAS has been invited to leave at least two forums to my certain knowledge. I really can't think why that should have been so, because he's capable of imparting such useful information - when he's minded to do so........

Lucia.

quoting a part of you.. now read my post..

thank you and good night.

I thought it would be a good opportunity to run cable from the front of the house to the back ready for the sockets.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Why on earth would you want to?

Would it not make more sense to just spur of your existing ring, at the relevant points that you want your outside sockets, and just go straight through the wall?
Obviously this would depend on the layout of your property, but it seems like you're going to a hell of a lot of trouble for this.

Or am I missing something obvious? :)

Anyway geraint, enough of all this nonsense, let's cut to the chase, shall we?

The OP is proposing to have an armoured cable at least 15mm in diameter exit through a hole in the wall, travel down the wall into a trench between a concrete drive and the base of the wall where it will be covered with a bright yellow and black warning tape and a few inches of decorative pebbles.

In 2 or 3 locations it will pop up out of the stones to a socket on the wall, and then go back down again and onto the next one.

Please tell me what reasonably foreseeable disturbance of the ground you think could occur which would damage the cable. There must be at least one scenario which is obvious to you or you wouldn't have disagreed with my view.

So what is it?

geraint - Can you go back over your posts and re-quote correctly. I can't fathom the flow of the topic enough to be bothered to read.

in your opinion.... could you advise. are you qualified to give an opinion in underground cabling.. surely a fork or spade can do utmost damage to a cable barely buried under topsoil..
do you think that warning tape might just spoil the flower bed.....
andycase007 - please note that since I asked geraint to raise any specific concerns he has about your idea he has returned to this site on at least 3 occasions and made 12 other posts.

Looks like you can safely assume that he has no actual objections - unfortunately your question, and the answers here, got a bit muddied by the fact that geraint has some pathetic personal issues and is prone to criticise any advice I give based not on what I say but purely because I have said it.

Wow.........ever wish you hadn't started something?? Didnt want to start a war between electricians....that could be dangerous..... CU's, Wire, Sockets...all dangerous weapons in the wrong hands. ha ha.

Anyway, i appreciate everyones answers before it got political and terrifying. Just as a side issue, ive read lots of posts on this site and comments by Ban All Sheds are always helpful and knowledgeable so cant see why there are so many attacks on him.
Anyway,
i have uploaded a couple of images of my electrics at present so someone may be able to advise on the state of the unused CU (the bottom one) and whether you can tell if it is usuable or not with regards Economy 7 etc.

P.S i cant just add on to an existing ring because the closest room to my garden is the dining room which is a flat roof extension, that the builders, b4 i moved in, only put one socket in on the wall furthest away from the garden. they must have drilled through from the kitchen and put one on the wall - the easiest route rather than the most helpful.

So are you still on a two-rate tariff?

When you come off I don't know what they do about the radio switch, whether it's disabled or still works but you pay the same rate for everything.

Why not turn off the bottom CU, connect a socket to one of the circuits, and see if/when it works?

Hi
Yes still on 2 rate tariff and my bills show 2 different amounts, so definitely using economy 7 on the main CU above the unused one.
Good idea about the socket, will try that another evening while still got the light to see in the cupboard.
The wiring in the old CU is still present but dissapears under the floor. i can only assume it is simply snipped off when the heaters were removed, because now the CU is permanently off, no electrics have been lost elsewhere. Have visions of bare ended cable swinging around under my floor boards!
Thats Tyneside properties for you
