overheating

on a open vent'heat only boiler if the boiler flow temp is considerably higher then the return and boiler overheats then this can only be dry system, pump knackered,airlocks??
what would be the symthoms of airlocks in central heat system ? overheating preceded by loud noises in pipework?ta
