Hi All

Sorry about the mind numbingly basic question but i just can't find an answer in old posts:

when talking about cable sizes in a domestic situation, is using larger cable than required acceptable?
for example if you disconnect an appliance that was the only thing on a circuit and is wired with say 4mm cable and wish to replace it with a socket that would normally only require 2.5mm, can you make use of the existing cable or do you have to run new?

Thanks

With the example you give, this would be acceptable as 13A sockets are designed to accept 4mm cable. The fuse needs to match the size of the cable and also the load, plus the circuit needs to be corectly labelled at the CU.
