Little cottage, 3 up 3 down- 4 generations of cable.

Does anyone actually get the croppers out and clear old cable out during or after a rewire ?

I do :D

1. It makes me feel good
2. Opens old routes for new cables
3. Re used joist holes and avoids swiss cheese joists

I was under the impression that most sparkies removed it if it was easy to get to and/or they wanted to reuse the route but otherwise didn't bother.

when and where ever possible, like you say advantages to using holes and most importantly as Rob points out there is cash in it at the scrappers (thou not at the moment)

Then of course there's the deep joy of trying to remove VIR cable which has been clipped to joists every few feet, not with proper cable clips but with 2" lengths of VIR nailed tightly down over the cable...

The guy who rewired my place didnt remove any of the previous wiring, I've removed piles of Lead and VIR cables, I dont know why people dont bother, it just adds more confusion to matters when the floors are crammed with loads of cables.

Was a bit of a shame to remove the lead as it was a bit of a work of art in places, certainly don't see many modern installs as neat, someone had added an external earth at some point, just tied in knots when they needed to spur off, lol.
