hi all, am overpainting magnolia with a light grey Matt emulsion (Dulux Chic Shadow), and the paint seems to be going onto the wall a bit funny, almost like a ‘mottled’ look.

The cutting in seems to go on better with the brush, just the rollered parts, and thus they show through clearly even when paint is dry.

Any ideas why? Not seen this before.

Thanks

I suspect you are not loading the roller enough and trying to spread it too far never keep rolling till the roller is exhausted. You will get a different finish with a roller and a brush rollers always end up with a slight "orange peal" effect.
It will need at least two coats for a colour change.

Thanks mate, will try that.

Same happened yesterday when painting white over the old magnolia. I knew it would take at least 2 coats, especially with white, it wasn’t expecting it to be that transparent?

I do find the DIY Dulux is thinner than the Trade one, I usually go into Brewers and ask them to mix up the colour I want, it is dearer though and depends how far you have to travel.
DIY is fine but as I say a little less opaque.

I assume it had a good stir first DIY paint may sit on the shelf for a while.(y)

The grey seems to be drying absolutely fine actually. :)

The white is disappointing though, I’ve used the same paint loads of times before, and it’s never been that bad. It is Leyland Trade vinyl Matt.

Wonder was it the type of paint that was on the wall previously?
