Can I suggest you look at "microporus" external paints?
This "type" of paint allows any water trapped in the "old red brick" [which can be porous] to "Breath"
What can occur is that if you apply a non-porous external paint, the moisture already trapped in the brick can cause problems?

As long as the paint is a breathable masonry paint.
