Paint For Wooden Staircase

I hope someone can help - I am trying to get this sort of look.

I have painted the spindles and lower parts with white satin wood trade paint - Can anyone suggest what paint I should be using for the tops? Ideally I would like a dark brown rather then black so would Ronseal exterior walnut paint be any good? I know this is water based but it is a wood stain

can't see a picture, do you mean the hand rail?, is it bare timber or previously painted or stained?

The spindles have previously been carpetted so when carpet came off I gave them a thorough sand down

I think you mean the treads (the bit you step on), if its bare timber osmo oil is very good.
