Paint For Wooden Staircase

I hope someone can help - I am trying to get this sort of look.

I have painted the spindles and lower parts with white satin wood trade paint - Can anyone suggest what paint I should be using for the tops? Ideally I would like a dark brown rather then black so would Ronseal exterior walnut paint be any good? I know this is water based but it is a wood stain

I think you mean the treads (the bit you step on), if its bare timber osmo oil is very good.
