I have just bought a new car and I am wondering whether to put a protective paint sealant on it. The garage I bought the car from wanted to charge me £300 to put it on. The sealants contain PTFE. Has anyone put this on their cars themselves and would you recommend it? :?

We used to have a Renault Clio that had such a treatment. The paintwork still got scuffed by trolleys and such, and I wouldn't say it made an appreciable difference to the life of the paint.

I have noticed that the paint on some cars seems to be far more resilient than on others. My Vauxhall's paint seems quite resistant to dings and dried-on bird poo. But looking at the number of Mercs parked across two spaces in my local carparks, I can only assume the paint is not up to the standard of the engineering!
