Hi

We have an inset stove in the house, where the old fireplace existed. There is some kind of board surrounding the sides and the back of the old chimney place. I guess to protect from the stove heat.

Anyway... we ended up painting the board, and now it stinks of chemicals whenever the stove is hot. Am I stuck with replacing the boards, or can I safely strip the paint off in some way.

Replacing the boards will mean new paster rendering around the chimney breast etc. :(

Thanks in advance!

I'm afraid you'll have to be careful stripping the paint - the board might contain asbestos !

Sorry to drag it up again, but some new information ... the boards in question are Vermiculite boards. Could I use a heat gun to strip away the paint? Or would the asbestos risk still apply? Thanks

There won't be any asbestos in vermiculite. You're unlikely to be able to get the paint off, vermiculite boards are quite porous so it'll have soaked in. Time to smash them out I'm afraid.

Argh.. Ah well. At least I can take consolation that it wasn't me that painted it :) Thanks for the reply.
