When starting to decorate a room should you undercoat and gloss the woodwork first before emulsioning the walls?

Ceiling ---> Walls --->Woodwork

Or if the wall and woodwork colours are similar..

Ceiling ---> Walls ---> undercoat ---> walls ---> gloss

Ceiling ---> Walls --->Woodwork

Or.....Top---> Middle--->Bottom--->

Ceiling ---> Walls --->Woodwork

Or.....Top---> Middle--->Bottom--->

Spose theres a picture rail and a dado?? ...and worse still...you might hit a hotspot!!

And whats a hotspot not?
