I have a glass panelled door that i stained years ago with a spirit based stain ad left it unvarnished as we liked the matt look, I would now like to paint with a Crown trade oil based that we had mixed to match the other doors and to be on the safe side should i use some Cover Stain first after a good scrub and a light sanding, I say Cover Stain as i have some and b-i-n is dear for the amount i would use.TIA.

I think water based primer/undercoat should be fine. The spirit based stain may leach into an oil based primer. That said, even if it did, it would lock the stain in the oil based primer and should not leach in to any oil based undercoat or top coat. BIN would be overkill and it is virtually impossible to get a high quality finish with BIN (unless you spray it on).

Edit---- my preferred waterbased primer/UC is the Leyland Trade stuff. It is paints at obliterating the colour but a dream to sand flat. And, it is cheap.

Thanks opps, From what you say i will use the Cover Stain as i already have it.

I think if should be fine, But don't be surprised if the dye leaches a bit as you drag the brush over the surface.
